AT Outreach Steward – AmeriCorps Member 

Position Description:

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club is excited to announce a new partnership with Goodwill of Northern New England’s Americorps program. The MATC will host an AmeriCorps volunteer whose title will be the A.T. Outreach Steward.  The Outreach Steward will serve for one year and receive a living stipend, health insurance, and an education award. 

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club’s (MATC) A.T.  Outreach Steward/AmeriCorps Member will focus on expanding membership, volunteers and diversity, as follows:

  • Advance MATC’s diversity, membership and volunteer goals through its existing committee structure, multiple partners, and in line with its Strategic Plan.
  • Assist in developing and implementing marketing materials and an outreach plan to recruit new or existing groups/individuals, in particular underserved groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Assist in training and logistically support volunteer groups on the A.T. Each trip will average one or two days of hiking/camping and will focus on trail/stewardship work.
  • Lead (help lead) training that covers various topics, for example: planning and preparedness, low impact backcountry camping and hiking practices, trail maintenance, shelter and bog bridge construction and repair, JEDI, and safety on the trail.
  • Connect new, diverse volunteers with outdoor experiences on the Appalachian Trail as well as with off-trail volunteer opportunities within the MATC.
  • Help expand and encourage MATC membership among diverse individuals.
  • Coordinate evaluations, write reports, create photo and narrative content after each volunteer project.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Outdoor recreation skills and knowledge related to backcountry, primitive hiking, camping, and working practices. Knowledge of proper outdoor gear and clothing.
  • Commitment to justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Enthusiastic and physically capable of performing essential functions professionally.
  • First Aid & CPR certification.
  • Facilitation skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate in an effective, diplomatic, and courteous manner.
  • Proficiency with navigating the internet and knowledge of social media platforms.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs applications.
  • Detail-oriented with strong time-management and organizational skills.
  • Self-motived and able to manage multiple projects independently.

  • Bi-Weekly Living Allowance (approximately $675 bi-weekly; varies depending on location)

  • Dates:   Mid-September start date. The position is for 1700 hours (approximately 11 months)
