Maine Conservation Corps: Summer Team Leader (listing for 2008 coming)
Hello! The Maine Conservation Corps is searching for the right person to join us as a team leader for the 2007 summer season.
COMPENSATION: $400 per week, AmeriCorps Education award of $1,250, and health insurance provided.
DATES: May 7 to August 17.
MCC enlists 6 person teams or young adults to do trail-building around the State of Maine.
Appalachian Trail rock work.
Acadia National Park trail rehab.
Maine State Parks.
Accessible Trail construction with heavy equipment.
Cross country ski trail construction.
Baxter State Park.
Tumbledown Mountain trail reconstruction.
Remote coastal Island trail building.
Teams are supported by talented Senior trail builders.
MCC is an excellent place to practice and improve your trail skills.

Summer 2008 Caretaker / Ridgerunner on the Appalachian Trail in Maine
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATION IS JANUARY 11, 2008
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- To teach Leave No Trace principles to groups and individuals
- To model and promote environmentally sensitive practices to the hikers on the Appalachian Trail
- To manage high-use camping sites on the AT
Specifically:
- Live alone at sites on or near the AT
- Meet, greet, register and provide information to hikers on the AT
- Impart Leave No Trace information on backcountry practices on where to camp, how to protect water sources, water treatment, dishwashing, fire regulations, and more
- Deliver educational presentations at campsites to hiking groups
- Maintain a composting privy system (Horns Pond site) and general site maintenance
- Ridge run - hike north and south of the caretaker's camp site on overnight trips - to perform the same tasks at other areas
REQUIREMENTS:
- A desire to teach Leave No Trace knowledge, skills and ethics
- Responsible and enthusiastic individuals with backpacking experience
- Excellent communication and people skills
- Good physical condition -- able to hike with a 40-lb. backpack
- Desire to live and work outside
- Comfortable working and living alone
- Current Standard First-Aid and CPR certificationse
- Reliable transportation and own arrangements for days-off housing
DATES: Each position has a different start and end date, ranging from mid May through October 2008. Caretakers work 10 days on/4 days off; ridgerunners are 5 days on/2 days off. All positions work weekends, days off are mid-week.
PAY: $375 - $450 per week (gross) depending on experience. Backpacking and camping gear are provided for the season.

2007 MAINE APPALACHIAN TRAIL CREW LEADER (listing for 2008 coming)
DESCRIPTION: Teach and lead a volunteer trail crew doing footpath reconstruction work on the Appalachian Trail in Maine. Projects include building rock steps, waterbars and retaining walls. Work will include stone cutting and use of rigging systems. Project sites are remote, located on mountains, and near lakes in northern and western Maine. Projects focus on teamwork and learning opportunities for volunteers. Training with cutting stone, rigging systems, stone work and leadership techniques will be provided. Sorry, no pets are allowed.
SALARY: $400 - $450 per week plus $1,250 AmeriCorps Education Award if eligible
DATES: May 7 to August 17, 2007
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of two seasons of trail work experience, with at least one season in an outdoor leadership role. Ability to teach trail skills is essential. Work requires previous experience using power tools and building rock structures. Must be in good health and physically fit, with a valid driver's license and clean driving record. Job requires a durable sense of humor, and the ability to maintain a safe and enjoyable work environment under challenging conditions. Must be able to motivate and work with people of all ages and backgrounds.

2007 MAINE APPALACHIAN TRAIL CREW COORDINATOR (listing for 2008 coming)
DESCRIPTION: Support operation of volunteer trail crews by planning meals, purchasing food, maintaining base camp facility, recruiting volunteers, assisting with transportation, and arranging leisure time opportunities. Participate at job sites on a limited basis.
SALARY: $400 - $450 per week, plus meals and lodging
DATES: May 11 to August 25, 2007
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of two seasons working in an outdoor recreation setting. Must have a valid driver's license and a clean driving record. Job requires an organized person with effective communications skills, and the ability to function as a team member. Ability to maintain accurate records and petty cash, is essential. Must be able to maintain a flexible sense of humor, and a safe and enjoyable camp environment. Must be able to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. Personal vehicle required. Sorry, no pets are allowed.
