Camp Tekakwitha Continues 11 Years of Volunteering on the AT - Two major projects in the Bigelow District have been completed thanks to Camp Tekakwitha. Based in Quebec, Canada with a facility in Leeds, Maine, this nonprofit gives back extensively to the Appalachian Trail. This is the eleventh year that I have had the pleasure of working with and learning from the "Camp Teka" teenagers.

Attention Sawyers - Important Alert - The U.S. Forest Service distributed a safety advisory last summer regarding the need to upgrade chain-saw chaps to increase the coverage/width protection for the lower legs to 14 inches, to increase cut-through resistance to a chain speed of no less than 3,200 feet per minute, and to provide thermal protection for fire fighting. Note to A.T. sawyers We need to know if your chaps meet the standards listed in this article, or if they need to be replaced because they don't comply or because of their condition. Please complete this survey as soon as possible (or contact your ATC regional office). There will be no cost to Appalachian Trail clubs and sawyers to replace substandard or damaged chaps. Gulf Hagas Brook Bridge Out - The Gulf Hagas brook bridge was taken out by the spring high water again this year. The bridge was broken and will have to be removed.  MATC is working on a replacement, but it will likely not be in place until fall at the earliest. Consequently folks headed in to the gulf should expect to get their feet wet at the Gulf Hagas brook crossing. Please cross at the designated ford rather than trampling brush up and down the banks of the stream. Posted 4-11-10

MATC is a volunteer nonprofit corporation that manages and mainatins 267 miles of the Appalachian Trail in Maine, its facilities and corridor. Anyone is welcome to come out on trail work projects with the club or its Maine Trail Crew.

Students from Dirigo High School helped construct a tent platform at the Sabbathday Pond campsite. The students hiked in the material and helped replace the 10x16 group tent platform at the campsite. They stayed over on Friday night and hiked out Saturday. A terrific group of kids!

MATC brings together people from all aspects of life, uniting common interests in the outdoors and a profound love of the Appalachian Trail. Lasting friendships and new-found skills abound amongst MATC members.

MATC worktrips usually take place on weekends and may involve overnight camping at or near the worksite. Worktrips can include lean-to, privy and site construction; footpath recovery (bog bridges, erosion-control techniques, waterbars); trail relocations; brush and blowdowns removal; paint blazing, and assisting the club's Maine Trail Crew with rockwork and footpath hardening.

MATC District Overseers advertise trail maintainer and lean-to/tent site maintainer vacancies on this website and in the club newsletter, The MAINEtainer.

Volunteer opportunities abound in the club. Whether it be trail or site maintenance, committee work or clerical work, come out and enjoy Maine's spectacular scenery and make a positive, lasting contribution to the Appalachian Trail.
